A Quermesse

A Tocantins feature film written and directed by Juliane Almeida, produced by MZN Filmes in coproduction with Borboletas Filmes, Jubalina Produções, and Sucupira Filmes as associate producer. The film completed principal photography on 8 May 2026 and is now in post-production.

The story follows Miguel — played by Christian Malheiros — a young altar boy in a small church in the Tocantins interior. When the sacred images are stolen from the parish, he decides to organise a quermesse out of season to raise the funds to restore the church, and in doing so has to leave the protected space of the parish and step into a much larger world. The narrative uses the popular festival as a metaphor for belonging and collectivity.

Shooting took place between April and May 2026 across Palmas and the surrounding Tocantins interior — including Natividade and Livramento — with a largely local crew (114 contracted professionals, 95% from Tocantins, 85% of the cast drawn from regional artists).

On set as Sound Assistant

My role on the film was Sound Assistant on the production sound team — set-based only, no post-production involvement. The job was straightforward: support the boom operator and production sound mixer, manage cable and wireless discipline on location, wrangle lavs on talent across interior and exterior setups, and keep the production sound chain running through long location days in the Tocantins heat.

Most days were outdoors or in active community spaces (churches, povoados, streets). Wind and ambient crowd were the persistent constraints; the interiors needed fast turnaround between setups because the production schedule was tight and locations had to be returned the same day.

It was a local crew through and through, and that mattered. Working on a Tocantins production, in Tocantins, with Tocantins cast and crew — this is the kind of work I want more of.
